If anything is a radio it’s your mandible. Only Lang Syne

is calling you Auld and anyway you murdered it.

Poem for the Morning

Recall

his slept-on curls

face half hid

under groggy

longing half

lit with slants

of kid-like sun

frame stoic

as an electric

transformer

midfield

a slow responder

your protective

liquids

intuitively

bubble for

as he stumbles

over an aphorism

looking down—

I’m only sketching—

a paraphrase—

there’s grace

in not being

seen. When I wake

I think, this

better be good.

Among pitches

blank for shortage

of self-esteem

offstage dishonesty

cranky pranking

or sheer need

for control

are those who—

if this has the air

of convenience it isn’t—

are overwhelmed.

Is it hotter

to plan pleasure

or be taken

in its musky

arms and thrummed?

He on his elbows

leans, elastic,

floppy, sincere,

reeking. Some days

I feel like rice

thrown at no one.

A pebble

in a mouthful

of pop rocks.

He says no

parachute

sail, windsock.
